Artsforum Talk 25th November

  • On 21st December 2011

Thanks to Vanessa and Beatrice of the ArtsFORUM in Brighton I was able to talk about my latest project Female Fighters. This was a special event in conjunction with Brighton Photo Fringe’s Open ’11. Preparing for a 20 minute talk followed by a 20 min Q&A about Female Fighters enabled me to focus on communicating the concept and address some of the issues I have been pondering whilst undertaking this self defined project.

Female Fighters is not a portrait project. It aims to explore the dualities existing in representations of women and the dualities existing within their own psychological states of mind. Using the temporal space between the 2 worlds of the ring and the outside as it’s setting this work also examines my subject’s ‘performance’ within this space whilst they are ‘coming back to themselves’ after an adrenalin high.

Meeting my fellow presenter Mariya Ustymenko who presented Motion and Silence was illuminating. The opportunity for us both to meet and discuss our unfinished projects has provided a great deal of useful food for thought in taking our projects forward and I am looking forward to seeing how we both progress.
