The making of Peacehaven in III Parts

  • On 2nd November 2010

This gallery presents an example of the documentary photography projects about Peacehaven. Starting with the first image I took in Peacehaven this gallery traces some of the key visual elements and plots key moments in the projects progression. Included are shots from the final installations and an interview (coming soon) with Peacehaven’s pub landlord from the Dewdrop Inn. Peacehaven in III Parts is a documentary photographic installation tracing the past and present of post WWI suburban seaside town Peacehaven. Presented as a 1930’s Peacehaven bungalow living room, collections of Peacehaven archive materials and objects are merged with contemporary photo books and portraits of today’s residents to create a fascinating and unique case study of the town.
You can view some of the separate elements from the Peacehaven documentary photography installation project via these links. There are two photo-books. Passing Through contains Peacehaven archive photographs and Home is Where the Heart is presents reportage, landscape and portraits of today’s Peacehaven residents. See some of this work here; Peacehaven Portraits and Peacehaven Shows.Although the foundations for this project are firmly rooted in the documentary genre, one of its aims is to reconsider how any document is being used within the project’s narrative. As such, all images, whether they are archive reprints, photocopies or photographs are placed alongside each other in a non‐hierarchical fashion. Of particular interest is where one person’s representation of a subject stops and where anothers starts and how this alters over time. Using chosen genres of documentary photography combined and juxtaposed with other mediums such as transcribed audio interviews and archive materials allows multiple narrative voices to exist at any one time to present a social documentary, which transcends linear time. In this re‐presentation of Peacehaven and it’s people the audiences’ journey maps that which was taken by the photographer as each element of Peacehaven is revealed and unearthed to those with the curiosity to delve deeper…
